Start with the definition, because everything turns on it. For air travel, a service animal is a dog of any breed that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. When your dog fits that definition, a US airline must allow it to ride with you in the cabin and may not charge a fee. The dog travels in your own foot space, never in a paid seat, and it may not block the aisle or spill into a neighbor.
Documentation is where a verifiable team pulls ahead. An airline may require the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form, on which you attest that the dog is trained, in good health and will behave. For a flight scheduled at eight hours or more, the carrier may also ask for a relief attestation. The rule does not ask for a registry number, a certificate or a purchased ID card.
